Freepoint Kitchen & Cocktail Chef, Matthew Gaudet

Chef Matthew Gaudet is a well-known Cambridge Chef, best known for his beloved restaurant West Bridge in Kendall Square, which was open from 2012-2015. As Chef and Owner of the restaurant West Bridge, Chef Gaudet received many accolades. The restaurant earned an amazing 3 ½ out of 4 star review from the Boston Globe; GQ’s Alan Richman named it one of the 12 Best New Restaurants; Bon Appetit added West Bridge to their Top 50 New Restaurants of 2013 and Food & Wine Magazine named Matthew as one of their Best New Chefs 2013.

Gaudet studied at the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts and during that time worked at Cambridge mainstay Chez Henri. Gaudet went on to fine-tune his skills in New York, where he built an impressive resume. One of his first jobs was at the prestigious Eleven Madison Park during its opening year. He then worked for Jean-Georges and then returned to Eleven Madison to become sous chef within Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group. A few years later, he became sous chef at the esteemed Aquavit under award-winning chef Marcus Samuelsson. Following this unforgettable experience, he became a sous chef for 71 Clinton for one year where Frank Bruni gave the restaurant a glowing two-star review in the New York Times. He then worked as the sous chef for Tocqueville for one year, perfecting European cuisine with an American sensibility.

After nine years in the Big Apple, Gaudet returned home to Boston and his family and friends. He became Chef de Cuisine at Brasserie Jo in Back Bay, working directly with Jean Joho to help captain the 200-seat institution. In 2009, he moved over to join the team at the Aquitaine Group where he served as Chef de Cuisine of the original Aquitaine in the South End. It was in the kitchen at Aquitaine where Gaudet defined his own cooking style by building on the foundations of French gastronomy, adding local products and international flavors wherever appropriate.

Following the closing of West Bridge, Chef Gaudet opened Superfine Food in Manchester-by-the-sea on Boston’s North Shore in 2016. In spring 2017 Gaudet opened Freepoint Kitchen & Cocktails, featuring a playful interpretation of global flavors and casual fare presented through a variety of small plates and shareable dishes. Gaudet’s menus reflect inspiration from past travels as well as a continuation of the forward thinking culinary thought process seen at West Bridge.
