The Boston Marathon
Since 1897, Boston has been hosting a marathon on President’s Day, and the 26-mile event is a huge attraction: some 500,000 spectators line the streets of Boston to cheer on the 30,000 runners. And it’s not just running enthusiasts who hit the pavement for the early morning run. On Marathon Monday, elite marathoners and Olympic hopefuls compete for cash prizes. For views of runners crossing the finish line, arrive early to score a spot at Copley Square, near the iconic John Hancock Tower. Two days earlier, on Saturday, April 15— a feature-length documentary about the marathon will premier at the Wang Theatre. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Martin Richard Foundation, named after the eight-year-old boy killed tragically on the same day in 2013, during the horrific Boston Marathon bombings.
