Outdoor Activities Near Cambridge, MA

The past few months have been difficult and uncertain. Most of us have had enough of staying indoors. With everything slowly getting back to normal, a lot of people are looking at ways in which they can spend time outdoors. If you feel you've stayed indoors long enough and are craving some outdoor experiences, take a look at some of the outdoor parks and activities that are open to the public with safety precautions and social distancing protocols.


Parks 

Charles River
A nature reserve that covers about 950 acres along both sides of the Charles River, this natural area offers bike trails and jogging paths. Spend a day at this reserve among nature, or bike along the beautiful Charles River Reservation Full Bike Loop. This moderate biking trail featuring lovely wildflowers, offers several activities along the path and is also pet friendly.


Fresh Pond Reservation
Visit the Fresh Pond Reservoir and Park for a quiet day in the middle of nature. Popular among walkers, runners, and cyclists, this 155-acre park is spread around the Kettle Hole lake. Go on the 2-mile paved walk around the reservoir or just relax and take in the beautiful pond views. Right in the middle of the urban jungle, this reservoir is a great place for you to relax and meditate.


Cambridge Common
Made up of 16 acres, the Cambridge Common is a historic city park and a National Historic Landmark. Relax in the quiet atmosphere of the park, people watch, or explore the area and learn about Boston's rich heritage. This park, consisting of playing fields, lawns, historic monuments, and pathways for people to walk on. This is the perfect spot for anyone who want to just sit on a bench under a tree and enjoy some quiet time.


Mount Auburn Loop
The Mount Auburn Loop is an ideal place for someone who is looking to get some hiking or exercise. Stretching for 1.4 miles, this trail has a great forest-like setting. Primarily used for hiking, people of all skill levels can go on walk and explore the area.


Other Outdoor Activities

Harvard Square
Visit the central business district of Cambridge and take in the energy of Harvard Square. The triangular plaza located at the intersection of Battle Street, John F Kennedy Street, and Massachusetts Avenue; this square is always lively. Explore the bookstores, spend a quiet afternoon at the many coffee shops or restaurants, or check out the lovely boutique stores. You will also see a lot of street performers entertaining people.  


The Harvard Tour
Go on a 70-minute walking tour of Harvard University led by its students. The tour comprises of unique theatre performances on a range of themes like the History of Harvard and Famous Harvardians. Visit major Harvard landmarks and get to know more about this historical university.


Central Square
Visit Central Square located at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Western Avenue. This square—listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places—is known for the bars, churches, ethnic restaurants, shops, live music, and theatre venues that it houses. Central Square is an ideal place if you want to spend a day exploring Cambridge and checking out some of the most happening places in the city.
