English conductor Andrew Manze and Russian-born British violinist Alina Ibragimova join the BSO for Brahms's warm, powerful Violin Concerto. The composer's friend Joseph Joachim premiered it in Leipzig in 1879. Russian/Swedish composer Victoria Borisova-Ollas wrote her celebratory, impressionistic fantasia Angelus for Munich's 850th anniversary in 2008. The piece was inspired by the city's church bells. Mozart's Haffner Symphony, written for a prominent Salzburg family, began life as a serenade, but the composer turned it into a symphony for a March 1783 Vienna concert of his own music attended by the Emperor.
