Patricia G. Davis, Associate Professor of Communication Studies at Northeastern University, will offer her reflections on Tschabalala Self's exhibition at the ICA in the context of her own work on Black women's representation in both historical and contemporary media and performance. She will discuss the ways in which Self's artistic vision centered on "avatars" of Black femininity may be situated within broader discourses of race and gender, as well as its implications for the politics and poetics of public representation of African American womanhood in the past and present.
