From #1 New York Times bestselling author Dava Sobel, The Glass Universe: How the Ladies of the Harvard Observatory Took the Measure of the Stars (2017) is the inspiring, little-known true story of women's landmark contributions to astronomy.  Among the remarkable women who worked at the Harvard College Observatory as calculators, or "human computers, is Williamina Fleming, buried on Maple Ave. Each month, the Mount Auburn Book Club meets to discuss a selected work related to one of Mount Auburn's many facets. Selections range from books on history, natural history, horticulture, art, architecture, preservation, and wildlife to books written by or about those now buried and commemorated here. The Book Club meets in Story Chapel on the second Thursday of each month. Coffee and tea are provided. Free. Experience a deeper connection to Mount Auburn Cemetery with free access to all our public programs and discounts on special events by joining the Friends of Mount Auburn. Our robust roster of programs each year is made possible through your generous support. Funding for programs has been provided in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
